James Henry HAMILTON was born 5 November 1790 in Ireland. He died 13 November 1818 in Livingston County, New York. COOMBS - GIBBY - HAMILTON

I am attempting to help an elderly gentleman from Vermont find his family connections. The information he has is Wm. HAMILTON of St. John New Brunswick sailed from there on the steamer ‘Maid of Erin’ in October 1851 to settle in Boston with his wife Dorcas age 45; son James age 19; son Robert age 17; and daughter Margaret age 14. His age was 50. It is believed that Margaret was reared by the HAMILTONS from infancy when her mother Deborah (COOMBS) GIBBY died. Her father was (John) Hugh GIBBY of St. John. He thinks Deborah was born in Ellsworth, Maine, but no proof.

Was the GIBBY-HAMILTON connection through Dorcas (COOMBS) HAMILTON which would have been her name if she had been a sister of the dead mother, or Dorcas (GIBBY) HAMILTON is she had been the daughter of Andrew and Isabella HAMILTON who reared her brother Francis Wilson GIBBY until age 18 when he accompanied them to Boston?

Hamilton

Looking for answers to reconcile information from three different sources of Hamilton information. The sources in question are The Heraldry of The Hamiltons, by G. Harvey Johnston [GHJ], Edinburgh and London, MCMIX (1909?); The Hamiltons of Burnside, North Carolina, and Their Ancestors and Descendants, by Patrick Hamilton Baskerville [PHB], Richmond, VA 1916; and A History of The House of Hamilton by Lt. Col. George Hamilton [GeoH], Edinburgh 1933.

All three agree on Arthur (de) HAMILTON, 1st of Parkhead, died 1580 [PHB], and married Christian HAMILTON - Her will recorded May 1584.

Version I: James HAMILTON II of Parkhead d. 1617 [JHB], m. Jean POLWART, will recorded 8 Sep 1628.

James HAMILTON, 1st of East Quarter d. before 16 Feb 1666 - misc., "1666+" recorded [JHB] - Bonds registered 1663, 1671 [GeoH].

James HAMILTON the Younger "inserted" by [GeoH] to fill in the line - {JHB] also hints at this in his book but does not include him.

John HAMILTON, 3rd of East Quarter d. 1752 [PHB] m. Janet ARBUCKLE 10 Nov 1709.

Version II: James HAMILTON 2nd of Parkhead [GHJ] d. 1617 m. Jean POLWART, will recorded 8 Sep 1628 – then the difference.

James, 2nd of Parkhead recorded as having two sons: Arthur HAMILTON 3rd of Parkhead will recorded Feb 1636 who had daughters Jean and Anna, who were served Arthur HAMILTON’s heirs 30 Dec 1658.

Claud, who is cited as ‘living’ in 1663 [GHJ] - Claud’s son is listed as: James HAMILTON, 1st of East Quarter 94th of Parkhead) d. before 16 Feb 1666 - misc. "1666+" recorded [JHB] - bonds registered 1663, 1671 [GeoH].

Both versions agree after this.

Version II seems to hang together better on dates, but which line is correct, or is there another "more correct" version?

HAMILTON - TAYLOR

Can anyone prove or disprove the family connection of Alexander HAMILTON born about 1848 in New Jersey, parents both born in New Jersey according to the 1880 census for Jersey City, Hudson County, to the family of Alexander HAMILTON, Statesman and First Treasurer of the United States? According to stated census, he was married to Sarah age 32 born New Jersey, children: Grace age 14; Hellen age 11 later married to a TAYLOR; and Robert age 6. They also had a servant, Mary Crosoley age 22 born Ireland. This Alexander’s occupation was listed as ‘Clerk in Office’. HAMILTON - POWELL

New information has surfaced offering a promising lead in the search for the ancestry of Micajah Hamilton, son of Theophilus Hamilton and Netty Powell , m 25 Mar 1796 in Orange Co. VA. Micajah was born near Fredericksburg, VA in 1797, grew up in Mercer Co., KY and died in Johnson Co. IN. A biographical sketch was discovered in an old newspaper column that indicates that his Hamilton ancestors immigrated from the River Severn

area of England in the 17th century and settled somewhere inland along the James River in Virginia. This sketch mentioned an Alexander and Arithela Hamilton as being "foreparents" of Micajah. They could be the original immigrants or of some later generation. Who are they? Any known Hamiltons that came from the River Severn area of England? I would appreciate any help.
