President Resigns

After serving as our president since 1989, Clay Hamilton is stepping aside for other pursuits. He requested that the officers appoint Larry Hamilton, Sr. to serve in this position, which they have done, effective 1 September 1998. We are sorry to see Clay step down, but truly understand why he has done so. He also served as our Society Director of Operations, Editor of the Connector, and was one of the founding members of HNGS. HNGS was founded 29 September 1978

HAMILTON

Seeking information on William H. Hamilton, born 1842, possibly Johnson County, Indiana, to Micajah 'Micager' and Nancy Terry Hamilton. He went by Henry Hamilton and lived in Eureka, Kansas. We have a family photo of him and his wife and child. I have found info on the identity of the natural mother of John Samuel Hamilton, born 21 February 1856. A family photo has surfaced of Nancy E., now going by Emma Hamilton; on the back it reads: "half-sister to John Hamilton." This means that Nancy Terry would be John Samuels natural mother, with Martha Lawson being the natural mother of Emma. The picture of Emma Hamilton was taken in El Dorado, Kansas. It is believed that the Terry and Lawson families were related.

HAMILTON, LAFFERTY, FINLEY

John HAMILTON (1713-1798) came to America 14 Aug 1729. He is said to have come with his Uncle Hance Hamilton, leader of the group. Who was John Hamilton's father? Did the father also arrive in America with the group? Was his name John also? Or James? Is there any information re: this parent of John Hamilton (1713-1798)?

HAMILTON, LACY, WHITEHEAD, HELMS

I'm fairly certain my Great Great Grandfather, William Alexander Hamilton, was born in Madison County, Alabama around 1849 to Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Lacy. My father says that he was always told our Hamiltons came from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to Oklahoma. I've traced our Hamiltons to Hill County, Texas then to Garvin County, Oklahoma. An uncle is pretty sure he was told our Hamiltons came from Scotland through Ireland to Pennsylvania. Is there anyone whom can connect the dots? I can't seem to go back beyond Alexander.

SWAN

I am researching my wife's side of the family. Any assistance or corrections would be greatly appreciated.

The earliest Swan is Dudley Swan b. Sept. 30, 1774. And married Sarah Greene 1777.

Their son was Thomas Swan b. Sept 11, 1870, d. April 1896. Thomas married Eliza Sanderson.

Charles E. was the son of Thomas and Eliza. Charles was born Sept. 16, 1843 in Waterford, Maine, and died in 1918. He married Julia Emma Netta Leonard July 26, 1864. Julia was born Nov. 19, 1846 in Ohio and died June 28, 1919. Julia's parents were Zenas S. Leonard and Elizabeth R. Ryckman?.

Here is a tidbit of information I have about Charles and Julia:

Charles E. Swan "Graduated from Fryburg Institute in Bethel, Maine and commenced the study of law. In 1863 he migrated to Muscatine, Iowa where he was in the fruit tree business. Later on he studied medicine and became a doctor.

Charles & Julia supposedly moved back & forth from Iowa to Maine, not sure of the years. from letter dated January 1, 1971 from their daughter Clara Lucille Bartholomew Boss."

Charles Swan and Julia Leonard's son was my wife's great-great grandfather, George Thomas Swan b. March 24, 1870, Waterford, Maine, d. June 25, 1936, Lorimor, Iowa. His first wife was Ella Lane. He married Grace Miller June 25, 1897. His married last wife Sept. 21, 1923 she was Josephine Stover, widow of John Thomas Reed.

Grace Miller was born 1880 in Beatrice, Nebraska, and died August 1901.

George Thomas Swan and Grace Miller had four children: Claire Lucille b. 1897, John Carl b. 1898 d. 1980, Ruth Robena, and George Ward Swan.

John Carl married Vivian Hazel Reed Oct. 21, 1919, daughter of the above John Thomas Reed and Josephine Stover.

REED - STOVER

I am researching my wife's side of the family. I have some spotty information on the Reeds and a little better on the Stovers. There is a claim of relationship to the Eisenhowers, but I have not seen any documentation. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Her great-great grandfather was John Thomas Reed, who married Josephine Stover Nov. 12, 1899. Josephine was born March 21, 1876 in Akron, Ohio, and died April 26, 1956 in Des Moines, IA.

Josephine was the daughter of William Stover, Sr. born Jan 14, 1852, died April 11, 1935. He married Mary Lenigar in 1874 in Virginia. Mary was born April 27, 1852 in Ohio and died May 23, 1920.

Siblings of Josephine were: William, Jr. b. 1878, George b. 1882, Guy b. 1885, Mary Aurilla, and Flara.

William Stover, Sr. is the son of Levi Stover and Aurilla Zink.

Mary Lenigar is the Daughter of Isias Lenigar and Mary Hiatt.

John Thomas Reed and Josephine Stover had two children:

1.) Vivian Hazel Reed, born Feb. 7, 1901 in Saylorville, Iowa, and died 1983.

2.) Walter Reed, born 29 Oct 1902 in Colfax, Iowa.

I need help with the ancestry and any information about William A. HAMILTON, born about 1815, South Carolina, married about 1835, Lucinda __?__ from Tennessee. They moved to Jackson County, Alabama about 1840. One of their 11 children was my grandfather, Henry Mac HAMILTON. Other children: Hiram, James, William, Samuel, Alfred, Eliza, Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary E., and Lucinda. This information obtained from the 1860 and 1870 Jackson County, Alabama Census. Hiram 19, and James and William, both 17, appear on the 1860, but not the 1870 Census. It is believed they died during the Civil War. Can anyone help with Lucinda's surname?

HAMILTON

Trying to find family of Ruth (NICKERSON?) HAMILTON. According to her marriage license of 1922, she is listed as daughter of John HAMILTON and Florence PARKER, born about 1899 in Boston. A DAR application filed by her mother-in-law her birth was listed as December 1899 in Providence, Rhode Island. Her Social Security Application listed her birth as 4 December 1902, Boston, with her mother listed as Florence FORD (was this her maiden name?). Ruth claimed in a resume to have attended Classical High School in Providence under the name of Ruth NICKERSON. Ruth had an Uncle Charles whom it is believed was a HAMILTON. Have checked all possible records, and have been unable to locate Ruth with either Nickerson's or Hamilton's.

HAMILTON - McCLEAN

Thomas Hamilton (c. 1705-1763) married Jane McClean (1704-20 Feb 1793) 16 October 1735. They were married in Edgartown, Dukes County, Massachusetts. Parents unknown. Came across a hand written Pedigree chart done many years ago that showed that Thomas had a father and grandfather both named Thomas, with the grandfather married to a Lydia. Ancestral Files show a Thomas circa 1643 and a Lydia Wing 23 May 1647 who had twin sons, Thomas and Daniel born 17n February 1671. Could this be the two Thomas Hamiltons shown on that pedigree chart found in the Granville, Massachusetts library?

HAMILTON - MARTIN - HILL

Has anyone come across an Isaac Hamilton (abt 1829, Indiana) and wife Abigail (MARTIN) (abt 1830, Indiana), with son Franklin P. (13 Apr 1852, Franklin, Johnson Co., IN) and two daughters, Mary E. (1856, Indiana) and Sarah (1859, Indiana)? Isaac was listed as a shoemaker with a Mr. Green in the 1850 Indiana Census. He married Abigail on 19 July 1852 in Vermilion County, Illinois, then went to Union, Madison County, Indiana where they were found in the 1860 census. Isaac, Abigail and girls have not been found on any census since. Franklin P., whom we belive to be the individual found on the 1870 census at an agricultural school in Peoria, Illinois, married Mary P. Hill on October 05, 1874 , in Ridgefarm, Vermilion Co., Illinois, permission granted by her father John HILL. Was Isaac in the Civil War? Did the family die in an epidemic? All help appreciated.

HAMILTON - HANDY - WESTFALL

My husband's Hamilton family goes back to Jonathan (1783-1843), and Ellen (1779-1863) HAMILTON, of Tomkins and Tioga Counties New York, through his son Ira HAMILTON (1825-1891) who married Laura M. HANDY (1831-1899). There is a possibility that Jonathan is the son of Thomas Hamilton (1752-1829) who married Sarah WESTFALL (1751-1785). I have not proved this connection. The research by Frances STENBERG showed the Jonathan son of Thomas and Sarah to have died unmarried in Tomkins County. All help appreciated.

HAMILTON

My great grandmother was Winona HAMILTON. My mother was raised by her grandmother, Winona. Winona lived on the Chesapeak Bay as a kid in the red lighthouse that is currently displayed at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor as the Seven Mile Knoll Lighthouse. Winona’s father Lawrence Hamilton was sheriff of Chestertown, Maryland before becoming a lighthouse keeper. Winona used to make trips to New York City to visit her family, the Hamiltons. My mother says that we are descendants of Alexander Hamilton, the famous American who is on the Ten Dollar Bill. I would like to find out if this is true.

There is red hair in my family indicating Scottish-Irish descent. Corroborating evidence that I am a descendant of Alexander Hamilton is that both my great grandmother (Winona) and my grandmother (Naomi) had Indian names; coincident with the fact that Alexander Hamilton was trustee and namesake of Hamilton Oneida Academy (now Hamilton College) which was founded to educate whites and Indians together. All help appreciated.

HAMILTON

I am a descendent of David HAMILTON (born 1756 or 1757 in Sharon, CT) and his parents Samuel HAMILTON (1725) and his cousin Mary HAMILTON (1727, who died in Sharon 1775) . I have been trying to learn the names of David's grandparents.
FYI: Recently, I found something interesting on the IGI. There is another David HAMILTON born 1697 in N. Kingston, RI who died 1781 in Sharon, CT, where my David was born. I think he may be David's grandfather (Mary's father?). He is a son of William HAMILTON, the Scottish immigrant born 1647. He married in RI, and died May 1749 in Danbury CT. William had a large family. Maybe his son Benjamin HAMILTON (1701) was Samuel's father?

Searching for an authoritative source which might contain the line of descent of the HAMILTON Baronets of Woodbrock, Co. Tyrone, Ireland. It is my understanding that the Woodbrook HAMILTONS descend from Sir Claude HAMILTON of Schawfield, by his wife, Janet HAMILTON. Sir Claude left four sons: Sir William )presumeably the progenitor of the Woodbrook line), Alesander, Robert, and Claud. Am also trying to establish if the younger sons listed above left any descendants in Co. Tyrone.
